Our trees are typically provided as bare rooted, one or two year old seedlings.
Order from us and you can be confident that your trees have been selected for timber growing and are strong, robust plants ideal for our climate.
Common or English walnut Juglans regia seedlings are often prone to frost damage and poor form. We supply
late-leafing provenances which do not flush (break into leaf) in
the UK until May and therefore rarely suffers from frost damage.
Black walnut Juglans
nigra seedlings are sourced for their timber producing potential and suitability to growing
in UK conditions, sourced from French and USA provenances.
Walnut hybrids of Juglans regia with J. nigra (Black
Walnut) and J. major (Arizona Walnut) are very vigorous, producing a
high, quality mature timber tree in 30 to 40 years under good conditions.
In the UK, planting started since 2000 when WTC started promoting these plants, and these young hybrid plantings look very
promising. Experts believe that a 45-50 year rotation should be possible in
the UK.
NG 23 hybrids (J. nigra x J. regia)
MJ 209 hybrids (J. major x J. regia)

Growing walnut trees for timber is potentially one of the few economic hardwood forest crops in the UK. A rotation of 55-60 years should be possible using good stock on the right site.
Compared to the best oak, walnut is worth four times the value and grows in half the time!
Foresters have been reluctant to plant walnut due to its reputation of being difficult to establish, prone to frost damage and often of poor form. However modern improved stock has transformed walnut growing. For the future, walnut is thought to be one of the few forest tree species that will benefit from a warmer climate.
